As you can see from the diagram, research has found your goals need to stretch your current skill level to create and experience ‘flow’. However, it needs to still be achievable otherwise you can create anxiety. Likewise, if a goal is too easy, you create boredom. This is why so many people who don’t have goals feel like they’re just going through the motions of life feeling underwhelmed, stagnant, and in a rut without that natural zest and enthusiasm for life. They are missing that ‘flow’.

Everything you see, smell, hear, and taste travels through your body in the form of electric signals. These signals pass from cell to cell until they reach their ultimate destination, your brain. They enter your brain at the base near the spinal-cord but must travel through to the frontal lobe (or behind your forehead) before reaching a place for rational, logical thinking to take place. The trouble is, as you can see from the image, they pass through your limbic system along the way, the place where emotions are produced. This journey ensures you experience things emotionally before your reason can kick into gear. The rational area of your brain (the front of your brain) can’t stop the emotion felt by the limbic system, but the two areas influence each other and maintain constant communication.

Talking about feelings with kids…

There are great resources you can find online with scaling questions and visuals children can use to colour in to explain how they are feeling. This also helps them to become more self-aware of their emotions and how to manage them. Too many people are feeling guilty for not being ‘happy’ all the time.
